The Family Room was part of our
project several years ago to add a couple more
bedrooms and baths, taking space out of the old
attic, and fashioning one of the rooms so that it
would hold several beds and thus accommodate several
people. The windows in the attic, which had been
purely an architectural feature to compliment the
exterior appearance of the Queen Anne style home,
were trimmed and decorated as a part of the new
rooms. Children (and adults from what we hear)
delight to sit in the little window seats and look
out on the world outside.
This converted attic room has become very popular
and features three of our grandparents' beds. One
is a Duncan Phyfe queen bed that is placed near the
exposed chimney and was in Jan's mother's family.
Another is a full-size day bed, quite old, that was
also in Jan's mother's family. In the earliest
years of our marriage, when we slept mainly on an
old "sleeping porch," this was our regular bed. The
old day bed opens up into a full-size bed and has
been placed next to one of the "reverse" window
seats.
The third is an antique iron full bed that sits
surprisingly in a small alcove, and was in Jerry's
grandparents' home, and may possibly be the bed
where his mother gave birth to him since he was born
at his grandparents' home. |
