The Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast
Amethyst Room--Brass and Glass
|
On the second floor, the first
room to the left gets its name from Jan's
collection of amethyst glassware, much of which
is in this bedroom. You can sleep in Jan's
grandmother's massive queen brass bed. There is
also a single bed in this room (when using this
extra bed, add $25 to the room rate). Stained
glass hangs in each window and other family
furniture pieces include an oak dresser. The
private bath for the Amethyst Room is just down
the hall and is a shower bath. The brass bed in
the Amethyst Room came from Bonham, Texas and
belonged to Jan's grandmother Saun-ders. Some in
the family have said the reason Jan got the bed
was be-cause no one else in the family had a
house strong enough to hold up such a heavy
bed. Some of the family's antique clothes are
also hanging on the armoire. This was our
oldest son Ken's room when we first bought this
house in 1984. |

Looking out of the room into the Angel Hall
This photo shows the end of the hall to the private
bathroom, which must be accessed by way of the Angel
Hall.
When The Lighthouse began being a Bed and Breakfast
in 1989, there had originally of course been no
bathrooms upstairs(there was only one downstairs,
and it was on the back porch when we bought the
house). The Blue Room had an adjacent empty room
that was easily made a bathroom, but Jerry and Jan
had to go into a portion of the attic and build two
shower baths, one for the Amethyst Room and the
other for the Apricot Room. This view is taken from
the hallway looking into the bathroom that serves
the Amethyst Room. |

This view shows the Jenny Lind single bed on the
left, which gives this room a maximum capacity
of three. |

Visible here is the very
old dresser which belonged to Jerry's great Aunt
Grace and Uncle Vannie Gummelt, who were his
grandmother's sister and brother-in-law. Jan
has done a wonderful job of refinishing this old
piece and therefore it does not appear to be as
old as it really is. The pulls on the drawers
are still the originals. Also shown here is
another of the wreaths.
|

This picture shows the ceiling
level of the Amethyst Room, with the ceiling fan and
two of the three stained glass hangings in the
room. Throughout The Lighthouse you will see
wonderful evidence of Jan's knack and talent for
decorating--Victorian style. The armoire in the
corner is old but is not the one that goes with the
dresser. That one is in Jerry and Jan's daughter
Karla's home, who lives with her husband Mark
Cunningham and four of our wonderful grandchildren--just
four blocks away.
|
This side of the room includes
a window that looks out on the
front yard. Near the
door is part of Jan's amethyst collection, from
which this room gets its name.

|
It is not always easy to maintain the integrity of the
old houses and at the same time add the needed bathrooms.
But we wanted to insure that every room would have its own
private bath. Out of all the bathrooms we have added, the
Amethyst and Apricot rooms are the only ones where you
have
to go down the hall to get to their
bathrooms.
| |

The view here is from the doorway. The twin bed is
immediately on the left, some of Jan's collection of
old family dresses hang on the armoire one one side
of her grandmother's brass bed, one of the many
stained glass hangings, tables and lamps, and wall
decorations are also visible. |

All rooms at The Lighthouse
have private baths. And most of them are en suite.
However, this is one of the rooms where you must go
down the hall to get to your private bath. The "down
the hall" baths do not have tubs--only showers. |
